The Guide

Towing and the Law replaces the booklet "SMMT Guide to the Law on Trailers". It concentrates on the safe use of trailers, and increasing public awareness of the rules and regulations which have to be complied with over and above those affecting drivers of motor vehicles.

The guide should not be construed as a legal statement.

Whilst every effort has been made to provide true and accurate information, the Society cannot be held responsible for the interpretation of its contents.

You should be aware also that the regulations referred to in the guide are likely to be amended from time to time. If you are in any doubt about specific legislation, you should refer to the latest text of the appropriate regulation which can be obtained from The Stationery Office (formally HMSO) or any book shop which sells Government publications.

The reference numbers of regulations referred to in the guide are listed in Appendix 2.
